Zinc and Diabetes: The Missing Link in Treatment

[PMID: 26365743] Zinc activates insulin signaling pathways independently of insulin, including the PI3K/Akt and ERK1/2 pathways. [PMID: 29373583], [PMID: 23266931] The prevalence of zinc deficiency in patients with diabetes is substantial. A study of 75 diabetic patients (both type 1 and type 2) found significantly lower serum zinc compared to 75 age- and sex-matched controls, with intracellular zinc showing similar reductions.
